TRANSFORMING LIVES: What is SPM?
Opportunity’s value – and the success of the work Opportunity does – is dependent on reaching those most in need – the poor and excluded – providing them with valuable, high quality, services that they would not otherwise receive, and ensuring that they are using these services to move out of poverty and reduce their vulnerability.
As an organisation we are committed to being transparent and accountable. Therefore, it’s critical that we have a framework for demonstrating and sharing our successes and failures.
That framework is Social Performance Management (SPM). SPM is an industry initiative that over the last 10-15 years has helped Microfinance Institutions achieve their stated social goals and put customers at the centre of their strategy and operations. A provider's social performance refers to its effectiveness in achieving its stated social goals and creating value for clients. If a provider has strong SPM practices, it is more likely to achieve strong social performance.
Opportunity is committed to SPM and promotes this framework across its network of 40 microfinance partners. We have adapted industry tools and reporting frameworks to fit the need of all of our stakeholders – our clients, partners and funders.
